چکیده

We discuss the feasibility of the detection of the 21 cm forest in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) with the radio telescope LOFAR. The optical depth to the 21 cm line has been derived using simulations of reionization which include detailed radiative transfer of ionizing photons. We find that the spectra from reionization models with similar total comoving hydrogen ionizing emissivity but different frequency distribution look remarkably similar. Thus, unless the reionization histories are very different from each other (e.g. a predominance of UV versus X-ray heating) we do not expect to distinguish them by means of observations of the 21 cm forest. Because the presence of a strong X-ray background would make the detection of the 21 cm line absorption impossible, the lack of absorption could be used as a probe of the presence/intensity of the X-ray background and the thermal history of the Universe. Along a random line of sight LOFAR could detect a global suppression of the spectrum from z 12, when the IGM is still mostly neutral and cold, in contrast with the more well-defined, albeit broad, absorption features visible at lower redshift. Sharp, strong absorption features associated with rare, high-density pockets of gas could also be detected at z ∼ 7 along preferential lines

On the Direct Detectability of the Cosmic Dark Ages: 21-cm Emission from Minihalos

In the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theory of structure formation, virialized minihalos (with Tvir . 10 4 K) form in abundance at high redshift (z > 6), during the cosmic “dark ages.” The hydrogen in these minihalos, the first nonlinear baryonic structures to form in the universe, is mostly neutral and sufficiently hot and dense to emit strongly at the 21-cm line. We calculate the emission f...

The Cross-correlation of High-redshift 21 Cm and Galaxy Surveys

We study the detectability of the cross-correlation between 21 cm emission from the intergalactic medium and the galaxy distribution during (and before) reionization. We show that first-generation 21 cm experiments, such as the Mileura Widefield Array (MWA), can measure the cross-correlation to a precision of several percent on scales k ∼ 0.1 Mpc if combined with a deep galaxy survey detecting ...

The hyperfine transition of 3 He II as a probe of the intergalactic medium

We explore the prospects of using the hyperfine transition of He II as a probe of the intergalactic medium. The emission signal from ionized regions during reionization is expected to be anti-correlated with 21 cm maps. The predicted emission signal from Ly-α blobs at lower redshifts is detectable with future radio observatories.

The 21 Centimeter Background from the Cosmic Dark Ages: Minihalos and the Intergalactic Medium before Reionization

The H atoms inside minihalos (i.e. halos with virial temperatures Tvir ≤ 10K, in the mass range roughly from 10M⊙ to 10 M⊙) during the cosmic dark ages in a ΛCDM universe produce a redshifted background of collisionally-pumped 21-cm line radiation which can be seen in emission relative to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Previously, we used semi-analytical calculations of the 21-cm signal...

The Gunn-Peterson effect and the Lyman alpha forest

We show that spatial correlations in a stochastic large scale velocity field in an otherwise smooth intergalactic medium (homogeneous comoving density) superposed on the general Hubble flow, may cause a ‘line-like’ structure in QSO spectra similar to the population of unsaturated Lyα forest lines which usually are attributed to individual clouds with 10 ∼ NHI ∼ 5× 10 13 cm. Therefore there is n...
